As our incredible journey in Portugal comes to a close, I can’t help but reflect on the breathtaking experiences we’ve shared as a family. This country has been a treasure trove of stunning man-made wonders, from the towering castles of Sintra to the opulent palaces in Lisbon. Each site tells a story of history, culture, and artistry that has captivated us. Yet, it’s the rugged beauty of Portugal’s coastline—the dramatic cliffs, golden beaches, and the lush landscapes—that truly takes my breath away. Standing on the edge of the Atlantic, I felt connected to both the vastness of nature and the intricate designs of human hands.
Today, we visited the Lisbon Oceanarium, where we marveled at the vibrant marine life beneath the surface. As I watched the graceful movements of the fish and the mesmerizing jellyfish, I found myself humming hymns that celebrate God as Creator. The beauty of His creation, both above and below the sea, reminds us of His infinite creativity and love.

Why We Believe God Created the Heavens and the Earth

In an age where various worldviews vie for our attention, the belief that God is the Creator of the heavens and the earth stands firm. The Christian perspective is rooted in Scripture, specifically Genesis 1:1, which states, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” This foundational belief offers a coherent explanation for the existence of the universe, emphasizing an intentional Creator rather than random chance.

Examining the Theory of Evolution vs. Creationist Debate

The Origin of Complexity: Evolutionists argue that the complexity of life can be explained through natural selection and gradual changes over time. They assert that simple organisms evolve into more complex forms without the need for a guiding intelligence. However, creationists contend that complexity, such as the intricate structure of the human eye, suggests intelligent design. The idea that random mutations alone could create such precision lacks explanatory power and fails to account for the specified complexity we observe.

The Age of the Earth: Many evolutionists cite geological evidence to support an ancient Earth, claiming that layers of rock and fossils indicate millions of years of history. Creationists, however, argue that these interpretations can also be understood through a biblical lens, suggesting that geological formations may have been influenced by catastrophic events, such as the Flood. They emphasize that dating methods are not infallible and often rely on assumptions that challenge the Creator’s timeline.

Let All Creation Sing

Many of my favorite hymns and praise songs celebrate God as Creator. Across various genres, spiritual songs have been composed that reflect on the beauty and majesty of God’s creation.

One standout piece is The Creation, an oratorio written by the renowned classical composer Joseph Haydn in 1798. This work, which can be described as an opera without acting, costumes, or staging, beautifully depicts and celebrates the creation of the world as narrated in the book of Genesis. Many consider it one of Haydn’s masterpieces.

Why This Matters

Believing that God is the Creator profoundly impacts our understanding of origin and purpose. The Christian worldview asserts that God intentionally designed the universe, as articulated in Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” This belief provides a foundation for meaning, morality, and identity, affirming that we are not products of random chance but rather the result of divine purpose.

Famous Christian scientist Francis Collins, former head of the Human Genome Project, stated, “The God who made the universe is also the God who has revealed himself in Scripture.” This underscores the harmony between faith and science. Similarly, physicist and theologian John Polkinghorne remarked, “The universe is a creation as well as a physical system; it is a sign of God’s love.”

These perspectives affirm that acknowledging God as Creator not only shapes our origin story but also enriches our understanding of our place in the cosmos. Ultimately, the belief in God as Creator provides a framework for our origin story. It invites us to explore the world with wonder, knowing that we are part of a grand design, crafted by a loving and sovereign God.

Accepting God as Creator naturally leads to recognizing Him as our Lord and Savior. When we acknowledge that God intentionally designed the universe and us within it, we begin to understand our purpose and value. This awareness fosters a relationship built on trust and reverence. As Creator, God desires to guide and protect us, inviting us to accept His love and grace through Jesus Christ. By embracing Him as our Savior, we align our lives with His divine plan, finding hope and redemption. Ultimately, recognizing God’s creative power deepens our faith and commitment to living under His lordship. Do you know Him?

Scripture Reflection

Colossians 1:16-17 (NIV): “For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

This scripture beautifully encapsulates the profound truth that Jesus is not only the Creator but also the purpose behind creation. Everything in existence finds its origin in Him and is sustained by His power. Acknowledging Jesus as both Creator and Savior invites us into a deeper relationship, one where we understand our significance in His divine plan.
