In The Devil Wears Prada, we meet Andrea “Andy” Sachs, an aspiring journalist fresh out of college who finds herself working as the first assistant to Miranda Priestly, a tyrannical editor-in-chief of a renowned fashion magazine. Initially rejecting the high-pressure culture of high fashion, Andy gradually adapts to the elite world of designer labels and prestige. However, this adaptation comes at a cost, as she begins to sacrifice personal values and relationships in her pursuit of professional success. The story masterfully explores the allure of ambition and its implications for our lives, inviting viewers to reflect on the tension between career aspirations and the sacrifices often demanded by them.
Kenneth and I recently attended a staged musical version of The Devil Wears Prada (and as a Scottish Highlander, Kenneth deserves five stars for enduring the entire show—he only dozed off three times!). The costumes, catchy songs, and dazzling performances brought the story to life. Yet, as I sat through it, I found myself reflecting on the narrative through a Christian lens, particularly its portrayal of ambition, identity, and values.

The Tension of Ambition
Immersed in the glamorous yet cutthroat world of high fashion, the musical illuminated the tension between societal expectations—that careers should come first—and the personal sacrifices required to achieve those ambitions. It prompted me to consider what we are willing to sacrifice to reach where we think we want to go in life. As Christians, this tension resonates deeply. How do we balance ambition with integrity? What does the Bible say about women, leadership, and ambition? And finally, is there a moral or Biblical objection to fashion and designer labels?
Ambition Through a Biblical Lens
The Bible provides a multifaceted view of ambition. It celebrates hard work and diligence (Proverbs 31:17) while warning against selfish ambition (James 3:16). This tension is exemplified in the lives of biblical women who balanced purpose with integrity. Figures like Deborah, Ruth, and Esther demonstrate that ambition rooted in faith can lead to profound impact. Deborah led Israel with wisdom and courage; Ruth’s loyalty and determination brought her redemption and honor; and Esther’s moral conviction saved her people from destruction.
These narratives remind us that true strength lies not in mere compliance with societal norms but in pursuing God’s purpose with faith and integrity. As Proverbs 31:25 says, “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”
The Influence of Media and the Arts
One aspect of the musical that struck me deeply was its casual use of the name of Jesus Christ as a throwaway phrase during moments of frustration. For billions of people worldwide, the name Jesus Christ is sacred, representing hope, salvation, and the cornerstone of faith. Trivializing it diminishes its profound significance and reflects a troubling cultural disregard for deep religious sentiments.
As someone who values the transformative power of the arts, I believe creatives have a responsibility to convey messages thoughtfully. The influence of the industry shapes cultural narratives, and negative portrayals or careless use of sacred names can foster misunderstanding and hostility toward faith. By treating the name of Jesus with the reverence it deserves, artists can promote inclusivity and understanding rather than division. The casual use of His name as an exclamation undermines the sacred and alienates those who hold it dear.
Celebrating Women’s Leadership and Faith
In today’s world, where many women continue to fight for recognition and equity, the Bible offers a countercultural perspective on female empowerment. The biblical narrative highlights women of faith who rose to leadership roles, exemplifying strength, courage, and purpose.
Women like Abby Johnson, Major General Linda Singh, and Senator Marsha Blackburn embody these values in contemporary society:

Abby Johnson: A former Planned Parenthood clinic director turned pro-life activist, Abby Johnson’s story is a powerful testimony of transformation and advocacy. She founded the organization And Then There Were None, which helps abortion clinic workers transition out of the industry. Johnson often shares her faith journey and emphasizes the importance of protecting the sanctity of life, aligning with Psalm 139:13-14: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

Major General Linda Singh: Linda serves as the Adjutant General for the Maryland National Guard and has broken barriers as a prominent female leader in the military. Singh is an advocate for women in uniform and often speaks about the importance of faith in her life and career. She has stated, “Faith is the foundation upon which I stand, and it drives my commitment to serve.” Her leadership reflects the biblical principles of courage and service found in Joshua 1:9: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Singh’s dedication to her country and her faith exemplifies the call for women to lead with strength and integrity.

Marsha Blackburn: Senator Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee is a notable figure in the business and political arenas. Before her political career, she was a successful businesswoman and an advocate for women in entrepreneurship. Blackburn emphasizes the importance of faith in her life and leadership, stating, “We have to put our faith into action.” Her advocacy for women’s rights in business aligns with Proverbs 31:16, which reads, “She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings, she plants a vineyard.” Blackburn’s work in both business and politics underscores the potential for women to influence change and advocate for values that matter to them.
These women exemplify how faith can empower women to lead with integrity and purpose, offering inspiration for future generations.
Christianity, Fashion, and Beauty
Christianity is not inherently opposed to fashion, designer labels, or beauty. Instead, it promotes a balanced understanding of design and adornment. The Bible showcases examples of beauty and craftsmanship that honor God. For instance, the high priests in the Old Testament wore exquisite garments symbolizing their divine service (Exodus 28). Esther’s story highlights how grace and beauty can serve God’s purposes. Even the New Jerusalem is described with streets of gold and precious stones, reflecting God’s appreciation for artistry and splendor (Revelation 21).
Paul’s admonition in 1 Timothy 2:9 serves as a reminder to prioritize inner beauty over outward adornment, emphasizing humility and sincerity in faith. However, this does not condemn elegance or luxury outright. When aligned with stewardship and purpose, embracing beauty can reflect God’s creativity and generosity.
A Woman of God: Clothed in Strength and Dignity
In a society that often prioritizes outward appearances, a woman of God prioritizes her relationship with Him. Her true beauty lies in her character and actions, empowering her to lead with integrity, advocate for justice, and inspire others. Whether in the boardroom, the arts, or at home, she reflects the light of Christ, demonstrating that her worth is not defined by worldly standards but by her faith and commitment to serving God.
The devil might wear Prada, but a woman of God is clothed in strength and dignity, making her witness the ultimate statement piece. She knows that true fashion is more than fabric; it’s a fierce confidence rooted in faith. Her legacy is one of courage, compassion, and unwavering faith, proving that true strength is found in her identity as a beloved daughter of the King.
The Devil Wears Prada serves as a dynamic backdrop for exploring how success and style can be navigated with discernment. It challenges us to consider the boundaries faced by women in a fast-paced, high-stakes culture, reminding us that our choices in a materialistic world should align with our deeper values and convictions. Let us celebrate ambition that is rooted in faith, prioritize integrity over prestige, and remember that true beauty radiates from a life lived boldly and unapologetically for Christ.
