Nicole Joy Munizzi is an amazing young woman with a story to tell and a song to sing!
Her latest single, “A Cure for Heart Trouble” reflects on a difficult time in her life, and how with God’s helps she has come through it. When she was just fifteen years old, a strange and disturbing darkness entered her world and she descended into a deep depression. “All the color drained from my world” she told me, ”everything vibrant and alive seemed to become gray and drab”. The situation reached its most difficult when, during a year of being homeschooled she retreated into isolation and despair.
Nicole is a wonderful Christian woman, and comes from a loving, godly family; and that emphasises the fact that Christians are not immune to difficulties in this life. Throughout that dark period in her life, Nicole prayed to God and asked Him to make her better. For a long time there seemed to be no cure, there certainly wasn’t an instant ‘fix’.
Yet, The Lord heard her cry. She says that while talking to her parents and others helped; the real breakthrough came when an opportunity opened up for her to serve others through a local church. As she began to care for others, the more she took her eyes off herself and her own problems. Having other people to help, not only reignited her sense of purpose, but enabled her to look out from herself – and that was, in the grace of God, transformative. “Every day I live my life for others, not just myself, it get’s better and better” she now says with a smile.
“I think I’ve finally found my pulse again”… “buried under all my sin” she writes in her latest song in which she describes finding God’s purpose for her life, right there in the middle of her suffering. It’s a remarkable song with a stunning video, which you can watch here:
Today, Nicole talks about the way in which walking each day with The Lord has meant life, love, color and above all joy returning to and flowing through her life. As we can see from her song, creativity has come bursting out of her too. When I asked her how the song came about she described the way in which the more she soaked herself in the scriptures, the more inspiring songs came out! While the initial hook popped into her mind, she felt the leading of the Holy Spirit to study the Bible and bring out a whole song from that starting point.
Now she says that one key verse in the Bible for her Is Nehemiah 8:10, which says, “This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength”. Because, as she describes in her lyrics, she has walked through the darkness of depression but stands strong today, in the joy of the Lord. She also has a great heart for people who are wrestling with depression –as only someone who has been personally acquainted with it can. She urges anyone who is toiling in what she describes as the gray colorless world of depression to seek to find God’s purpose for their lives; and to start by asking at a good church. I’d add to that that if you are reading this, and that is you; that you are not alone, God loves you, and if we can pray for you; please do get in touch, The Lord can restore your joy and hope.
